Limestone Federal Credit Union Wraps Up LSSU Kids Camp with Successful Lemonade Stand Event

The Hub @ LSSU, driven by Limestone Federal Credit Union (LFCU) recently held a financial literacy session at Lake Superior State University’s (LSSU) Kids Camp. This session drew concepts from the children’s book, Owl and Otter and the Big Yard Sale, by DK, a program made possible in part by Michigan Credit Union Foundation. This charming, humorous story helps children practice counting and addition, and introduces them to the world of money, emphasizing that with teamwork anything is possible.

During LSSU’s Kids Camp, LFCU organized a Kids Entrepreneur Lemonade Stand event, where the children had the chance to set up and run their own lemonade stands. This initiative was aimed at teaching our youth valuable lessons in teamwork, money management, customer service, and creativity—all in a safe and supportive environment.

With plenty of teamwork, a lot of creativity and a little bit of chaos, the children built their own lemonade stands out of cardboard boxes. The event took place on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, and Thursday, August 8, 2024, right outside the back of the Walker Cisler Student & Conference Center.

With the support from parents, community members, LSSU students, faculty, and staff, the kids raised a total of $570.00. Lemonade and cookies were provided by Limestone FCU at no cost. Adding a philanthropic arm, students were asked to nominate a local charity or nonprofit organization to receive proceeds of the sale. Students voted for two charities; the Animal Shelter who were presented a check in the amount of $362.00, and the Salvation Army, who were presented a check in the amount of $208.00.

“The students of the LSSU Kids Camp showed incredible dedication in planning, building, and running their lemonade stand. Entrepreneurship at a young age not only teaches children creativity, resilience, goal setting, and teamwork, but also equips them with essential skills that will serve them well in their future. The lemonade stand was a hit, and the children had a blast!”

-Chelsey Zeeryp, Branch Manager, at The Hub @ LSSU.

“This was a wonderful event that supported the children, local charities and the lemonade was refreshing! LFCU had a great time cheering on our future leaders!”

-Sabrina Oshelski, Business Development Officer, at Limestone Federal Credit Union.
